A relative of Marjoram, Oregano is a culinary herb, used for the flavour of its leaves, which can become stronger when dried. It has an aromatic, warm, and slightly bitter taste, which can vary in intensity.

The popularity of the herb in the US began when soldiers returning from WWII brought it back with them from southern Italy where it had been eaten for centuries.

In Italy it is most often used with roasted, fried, or grilled vegetables, meat, and fish. Oregano combines well with the spicy foods that popular in southern Italy whilst in the North Marjoram is favoured more.
